Talcher: Power supply to the four southern states has been affected since last evening following a fire in the fourth unit of the 3000 MW super thermal power station (STPS) of NTPC at Kaniha, 25 kms from here, company sources said today.

The fire, the cause of which is yet to be ascertained, has extensively damaged three generator transformers of the fourth unit of the plant and also the switchyard along with other accessories, the sources said.

No one, however, has been injured in the accident.

The sources said there was an explosion and flames rose to a height of about 50 metres, which prompted the authorities to immediately switch off the adjacent fifth unit of the plant.

The fire affected the supply of electricity to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, the sources said.

The coal-fired plant is the biggest of its kind in Asia and has six units of 500 MW each.

Preliminary estimates put the loss at around 30 crore and it would require about three months to reinstall the generator transformers and make the unit functional, the sources added.
