Yoga guru Ramdev has ended his fast and civil society campaigner Anna Hazare and his team are on the backfoot. This presents a rare opportunity for the United Progressive Alliance government to recover some of its lost sheen.
This is not the time to exult after the so-called victory—though preliminary indications are that matters are headed that way. The government, especially Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, should come forward and state its willingness to take meaningful steps to curb corruption.
If the government has some imagination, it should call a special session of Parliament. The matter should be discussed threadbare and followed by framing of tough legislation. This should not only prescribe strong punishment, but should have deterrent provisions that put fear of the law in those who want to indulge in corrupt practices.
