Tricia Guild and her wall coverings

East meets west

Tricia Guild’s first brush with India happened when she reworked a block-printed collection of Indian textiles. Twenty-seven years later, she has finally entered the market that inspired her work.

Floor & Furnishings (F&F), a Delhi-based furnishings store, has tied up with Designers Guild to introduce luxury fabrics and wall-coverings to Indian homes. The guild’s distinctive style of bright, colourful patterns, floral prints, gold leafing and hints of Asia-inspired motifs could add a plush touch to any room.

The latest Designers Guild collections will be showcased at F&F’s Karol Bagh and Gurgaon showrooms, tucked into a special designer’s corner and paired with other luxury brands such as Harlequin and Elitis. The stores will showcase extensive upholstery lines, such as the Portobello, a strong geometric patterned fabric, and the Brocatelle, a rich floral print. F&F will also showcase its wall coverings collection such as Sarafan, a floral design accented by metallic detailing on linen leaf damask. The fabrics will be available in the range of Rs125-Rs250 per sq. ft.Floor & Furnishings, 22/13 Gurudwara Road, Karol Bagh, New Delhi, and MG Road A-5, Sushant Lok, Gurgaon

Design wonderland

One way to grab the buyer’s attention in the crowded interiors market is to create a spectacular presentation at the store. Appartment 9, the one-and-a-half year old Delhi interiors store, does just that with its wooden wonderland of a showroom. Dark wooded, leafless trees act as pillars, bedposts and decorative accents to the sequined fabrics, wood furniture and glass vases.

The Delhi-based showroom has a larger ground-floor space.

The Mumbai showroom of Appartment 9, recently opened just behind the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower in Colaba, hosts the same collection in a breezy, high-ceiling space. The prices of the furniture line run between Rs58,000 and Rs1,20,000.

Chandelier set

You could only put this down to the buzz surrounding the Fendi design label. Within days of Fendi Casa furniture making its debut last month at this Mumbai outlet, every single item had sold out.

From the chandelier to the bed, customers swooped down on the store to bag the first lot. And the fact that a superbly crafted sofa could cost upwards of Rs10 lakh or that a bed carried a tag of Rs30 lakh did not make label loyalists blink.

Fendi describes its furniture as ‘uber chic’, so the designs are contemporary, but there is nothing minimal about them. The line also prides itself on creating handmade pieces and offering customers an array of upholstery options. You could opt for leather that is plain, suede or Roman (cuoio romano).

“Fashion is very much linked with furniture at the moment. At Fendi Casa, colours, textures, and other key details are primarily organized by the fashion staff. So the concepts of fashion split into the world of furniture," says Samvit Tara, who, along with his mother, Aruna, runs the store.

Fendi Casa sub-labels its furniture, too, so the sofas could be Minosse (extravagant dimensions), Albione (classic lines), Villa Pamphili (retro inspired) or Doria (sofa plus swivel armchair).

The nearest port for Indian Fendi fanciers is Dubai. But International Furniture Brands claims that it offers prices good enough to save you a flight to the Gulf.

Simplicity refined

There was a time when curtains and bed linen in handsome checks, weaves and neat prints in earthy colours were the domain of Fabindia. Today, you could get them off the pavement at weekly bazaars in Delhi. Maspar is special because it has redefined that elegant, no-nonsense look.

“We put together a look so the designs are conceived the way a shop would dress a mannequin. But we also make it possible to change the look of a room with single elements," says Abhinav Mahajan, a director on the Maspar board. Though the shop specializes in cottons, it also offers mixed fabrics. The prices are fairly reasonable. Bedsheets cost between Rs995 and Rs3,000 and the most expensive curtain panel costs Rs1,250. Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, Maspar has branches in Bangalore and Ludhiana.

Bag of tricks

If you are looking to put together a creative interior, where the furniture is more than just some functional artefacts, head for Pallate. Here is a designer interior store that likes to spring interesting surprises on its buyers. For two years now, it has picked and displayed furniture and accessories with unique designs and material. But the clamour for designer furniture and interior products from Europe, say the owners, is growing. Pallate has thus opened up two whole floors to showcase brands such as Moooi, Piet Boon Zone, Edra, Cassini, Ceccoti, Verdesign, Paola Lenti and Dedon.

The designs of the new collection are contemporary and essentially fit the apartment space, but that does not mean that they lack charm or aesthetic appeal.

Be it the beautiful red Edra petal-shaped chair called the Rose that costs around Rs33,000, or a minimalist but well-crafted bed at around Rs8 lakh, there is a distinctive element to every piece.Pallate, Badamia Manor, 34, S.K. Rathod Marg, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai
