It is not clear if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be able to unfurl the tricolour in Srinagar on Wednesday.
As matters stand, the refusal of the state government to allow the BJP to go ahead with its programme smacks of pandering to secessionist sentiments that are so rife in the valley. The behaviour of other political parties in this matter, too, is puzzling. Why should there be any political games over the national flag?
Had it been that simple, it would have been easy to say three hurrahs for the BJP and castigate others. It isn’t.
The BJP should have desisted from pushing ahead if only for preventing loss of life and property in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The danger of this is real. The state government is incompetent as it is; it’s quite possible that this event may make J&K more ungovernable. If only to avoid that, the BJP should reconsider what it is doing.
