Shifting the Logic

From 24 November

Many of Dilip Ranade’s precise line drawings on view this fortnight, courtesy Gallery Threshold, would look at home in the pages of ‘The New Yorker’ magazine. Ranade’s style in these 150 drawings from 1977-2007 incorporates the spare, fine lines of a draughtsman, as Ranjit Hoskote notes in his catalogue essay. These drawings are highly imaginative and quirky and, though they don’t have the in-your-face humour of a cartoon, there is a sense of mischief. 11am-7pm. Shridharani Gallery, 205, Tansen Marg, Mandi House (23718833). Free.

Jazz Utsav

23-25 November

We tell you what to watch out for at this year’s edition of the annual jazz fest:

Paula Jeanine

23 November

New York-based jazz singer Jeanine first came to Mumbai in 2001 to study Hindustani classical vocal techniques with Dhanashree Pandit-Rai at the Jazz India Vocal Institute. Her subsequent trips here have included work with local jazz heroes such as Louiz Banks, with whom she has recorded, and Colin D’Cruz and Joe Alvares, with whom she has performed. She will open this year’s festival with “great American jazz classics" and also plans on slipping in “a little ghazal mixed with a bluesy jazz piece" to give audiences a taste of her ongoing American ghazal project. 7pm. Lands End Amphitheatre. Free passes available from ‘Celebrate Bandra’ (26004640).

Madhav Chari Trio

24 November

The country’s best jazz pianist, Madhav Chari went to the US in 1985 to study mathematics, but changed tack a few years later. That loss, as it turned out, was quite a gain for jazz. By industry standards, his is a young career, yet one that has seen collaborations with such legends as drummer Max Roach. Besides performing in the US and in Paris and Singapore, he used to head Nomadic Subjects, a New York-based fusion group influenced by Afro-Cuban music and classical music from the subcontinent. He will be joined by bassist Karl Peters and drummer Adrian D’Souza. Watch out for some killer Duke Ellington standards. 7pm. Lands End Amphitheatre. Free passes available from ‘Celebrate Bandra’ (26004640).

Louis Banks with Martin Dahanukar+Café Du Sport+Krsystof Herdzin Trio

25 November

The third and final day of ‘Jazz Utsav’ will include performances by local hero Banks and trumpet player Dahunkar as well as two eclectic European acts: Polish pianist, arranger and composer Herdzin–who plays bebop, fusion and funk–and German quartet Café Du Sport–who switch from swing to cool jazz and from Bossa Nova to blues. 7pm. Lands End Amphitheatre. Free passes available from ‘Celebrate Bandra’ (26004640).
