Whatever his past record, we have to give this to telecom minister A. Raja—the man has a miraculous ability to survive against the odds. On a day when the Congress party seemed intent on cleaning house, the telecom minister once again managed to slip the net. Ashok Chavan and Suresh Kalmadi were not as lucky. Yet, by removing them from their offices—as Maharashtra chief minister and secretary of the Congress parliamentary party, respectively—the Congress has taken only the first small step towards addressing two major public scandals. There’s a tendency to forget the wrongdoings of politicians oncethey vacate office. The Congress would do well to guard against such an outcome in the Adarsh Cooperative and Commonwealth Games scams. As for Raja and the telecom scam, we trust in the bard—the truth will out.
