On Thursday, when Union minister Salman Khursheed exclaimed, “All is well, don’t worry,” he summed up the political situation very well. The unease between two senior ministers of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Pranab Mukherjee and P. Chidambaram, had vaporized.
The “patch-up”, however, leaves many questions unanswered. Mukherjee said the background note on the 2G spectrum issue had “certain inferences and interpretations” that did not reflect his views.
In that case, what was the fuss all about? What cannot be ignored is that there were differences between the two that defied resolution at their level and it took external intervention to effect a truce. And what can’t be denied are the serious governance problems that plague this government. Every now and then, it is hit by some controversy or the other. This won’t be the last one.
