HT Media’s managing editor says focus still on good journalism

Pankaj Paul, the managing editor of Hindustan Times, said his new coordination role at India’s second largest selling newspaper will be “to facilitate change and focus still on good journalism".

On Saturday, HT Media Ltd, the publisher of Hindustan Times, had said in an internal announcement that Chaitanya Kalbag, editor-in-chief, Hindustan Times, and the company have “mutually agreed to end their relationship". Kalbag had been in that post for 11 months. The company did not elaborate on the reason for the change. Kalbag declined to comment for this story.

In its statement, HT Media said Paul , 42, will “be responsible for rapid product improvements, ... improving synergies across various news organizations in different cities and help modernize the newsroom ..." and report to Shobhana Bhartia, editorial director, Hindustan Times, and vice- chairperson, HT Media. It also said that the editors of the Mumbai and Delhi editions of Hindustan Times would report to Bhartia.

Paul joined HT Media in July from The News Journal at Wilmington, where he was managing editor of niche and new initiatives. He has also worked at San Jose Mercury News in various positions, including editorial art director.

HT Media also publishes Mint in addition to Hindi newspaperHindustan. It runs an FM radio station, too.
