• Open Arms, Raised Legs
When buying sofas and armchairs, look around for pieces that are raised on legs and have open arms. They create a sense of light and space, forming an illusion of additional space in the room.
• Multi-Task
While we’re still at furniture, don’t miss one thumb rule – opt for multifunctional furniture. For instance, a classy ottoman can also double up as a coffee table, a side table or an expandable dining table and a folding table, which can be neatly folded to be used only when there is a need.
• Color-coordinate
Did you think of buying some of the furniture in the same colour as your wall? Well, that’s your easy fix to creating an illusion of space with some thorough planning. The furniture and the wall blend in smoothly and will widen the space considerably. Throw in some amazing contrasts and the outcome can be quite stunning.
• See-through
The minute you can see-through, you’ve scored brownie points in this space battle. Be it glass tables or Lucite chairs, they do a perfect job of making the eye and the mind believe that there is more space than ground reality. With this, you’ve also successfully given your space a very chic look.
• Draw Lines
Vertical lines – be it drapes, wallpaper, upholstery, bedspreads – add volume to the room, not literally but figuratively. Let the drape reach the floor rather than end where the window stops. Horizontal, well-spaced stripes on the wallpaper also serve the purpose. Get a carpet with vertical lines and see how your living area assumes broader dimensions.
