It could just be another conspiracy theory about China, but it is only apt that a pageant titled Miss World be affected by a global political dispute. Daily Mail reported on Monday that China, the pageant’s host, may have sabotaged the chances of Miss Norway. The report pointed out that Miss Norway was, at 6/5 (the best odds in Miss World history), the favourite to win the pageant. China, the newspaper said, was not happy about the Norwegian Nobel Institute’s decision to award this year’s Peace prize to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. In early October, Reuters reported that Beijing had cancelled a meeting with a visiting Norwegian minister to indicate its displeasure. Still, cancelling a meeting is one thing; fixing the results of a pageant, another. Fantastic as it sounds, the allegation might find buyers in India: the country’s representative didn’t make it to the top 20 shortlist at the pageant.
