Call it the irony of politics. As reported in Mint today (see Page 5), the judicial upholding of the ban imposed on certain candidates has resulted in the Left gaining an upper hand in Delhi Univer-sity (DU) student elections.

Delhi University is hardly a Leftist place. At the same time, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has gained ground in recent years in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a known Left pasture.

The wheel has turned from the situation during the Emergency when Arun Jaitley controlled the DU students union and Prakash Karat was the helmsman at JNU.

The two leaders find themselves in sobering circumstances these days. It would be interesting to find out what they have to say about the changing fortunes of their brand of politics in places where they learnt their first lessons in public life.

Too much should not be read into these changes: They are more likely to be due to general restlessness in student life and judicial intervention. Ideology and other weighty matters have less to do with this enjoyable spectacle.
