Quick Edit | More blows for Games
It was the last thing the 19th Commonwealth Games (CWG) needed. On Tuesday, Mike Hooper, chief executive of the Games federation, said the Games village was “filthy and uninhabitable". As if almost on cue, a foot overbridge close to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium collapsed. Hooper’s comments came close on the heels of a letter from another federation official, Michael Fennell, to the cabinet secretary on the poor state of preparedness.
With just 11 days to go, these can only be termed as blows to the Games. This sounds harsh, but there is an element of truth in it. These are the wages of years of laziness and a few months of frenzy. With each passing day new problems strike the Games. Bigger problems in the days to come can’t be ruled out.
It’s too late to do anything about the shoddy infrastructure. One can only hope the Games pass off smoothly.
