Govt sets 26.3 mn tonnes wheat purchase target for ’10
New Delhi: India, the world’s second biggest wheat producer, has set a higher procurement target of 26.3 million tonnes in the new marketing season that began on 1 April, a government statement said on Wednesday.
Food Corp of India (FCI), the state-run grain procurement agency, had procured 25.4 million tonnes of wheat from local farmers last year.
The agency said wheat purchases since 1 April stood at 996,000 tonnes, as compared with 817,000 tonnes a year ago.
Purchases of rice since 1 October 2009, when the current marketing year began, were lower at 25.5 million tonnes, versus 26.3 million tonnes a year ago.
