New Delhi: Michael Dell, founder of computer maker Dell Inc., and his wife Susan are donating $2 million (Rs8.8 crore) over five years to Sesame Workshop India, the non-governmental organization involved in educational outreach programs.

Sesame Workshop India is spearheading the education programme Galli Galli Sim Sim, a popular Hindi language adaptation of the American television serial, Sesame Street.

“It’s really a testimony to our belief in the potential of Galli Galli Sim Sim for education," said Shari Rosenseld, vice-president, international projects, Sesame Workshop.

The one-year-old serial runs across three Indian tevision channels, Pogo, Cartoon Network and Delhi Doordarshan, but Sesame Workshop India’s education programme is a grassroots effort, focused on some 25 slums and 22,000 children in the capital.

The workshop screens the programme in slums using vans with display screens.

Dell, who this week replaced Kevin Rollins as CEO of the world’s second largest computer manufacturer, is making the donation through the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, a foundation with an endowment of $1 billion set up by the Dell’s in1999. It has funded roughly $270 million in education projects across the world.

Dell Computers India has posted sales of $400 million, up 50% from the previous year.

The Indian subsidiary employs 14,000 people across the five cities in Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chandigarh.

Last summer, Dell is spent time with slum children of Koramangala near Dell India’s Bangalore headquarters.

This is not the Dell Foundation’s first project in India. Last year, it invested $ 7.5 million for a 13.8% stake in Ujjivan Financial Services Ltd , a new microfinance institution based inBangalore.

Because it is a major endowment, an investment by the Foundation could help boost the image of non-governmental organizations. “It gives us a lot of credibility that a foundation like the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation is investing in our project," said Samit Ghosh, chief executive officer of Ujjivan Financial Services.

Sesame Workshop is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1968. The Workshop offers programmes in 120 countries and is behind popular programmes such as Dragon Tales, Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat, Pinky Dinky Doo.
