If news reports are to be believed, a joint Indo-Bangladeshi survey group was obstructed by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel in Meghalaya on Wednesday.
This is not the first time that BDR men have created problems of this kind. There have been occasions in the past when BDR soldiers have fired on troops from the Border Security Force.
This is a situation that requires close monitoring as the influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, a problem ignored by successive governments, poses serious security and demographic risks to states in the North-East. In fact, much of the agitation in Assam owes its roots to the deliberate ignoring of this issue.
This is the second time in two days that BDR men have prevented the joint group from working. Whatever be their intention, it is important that such surveys be completed as soon as possible and the border fenced and sealed.
