A row has broken out between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over responsibility for inflation. The NCP has reacted angrily to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has blamed compulsions of coalition politics for the government’s problems in taming inflation.
The NCP has defended Sharad Pawar, Union agriculture minister. It has said the government is collectively responsible for problems such as inflation. This is a poor excuse and makes nonsense of individual responsibility of ministers for their portfolios.
If this were true, then by logical extension, the government as a whole would be responsible for corruption while no individual minister would be culpable. Pawar cannot evade his share of responsibility for the inflationary mess the country finds itself in today. Coalition politics has little to do with this.
