NEW DELHI: India’s commodity futures exchanges are likely to see higher volumes and an increase in value of items traded in the year to March 2008, the finance ministry’s annual economic survey said on 27 February.
In the past few weeks, politicians have blamed futures trade for a sharp rise in the prices of various food items and have demanded a ban on futures on farm products.
“Particularly agricultural commodities are expected to gain importance, helping their price discovery process and thereby providing an opportunity to farmers,” the survey said.
The average daily volume of trade in the commodity exchanges in December 2006 stood at $2.7 billion (Rs 11922 crore).
