Mint has won an award for excellence in investigative reporting at the recent Sopa awards. The award was for a series of articles on air safety reported and written by Mint’s staff writer Tarun Shukla and anchored by the newspaper’s then national news editor Anil Penna, who now heads the Mint bureau in Hyderabad.

Shukla, one of the best aviation reporters in the country, has written two series of articles on air safety and is working on a third. You can read all the articles at www.livemint.com/safeskies. One of the articles in the award-winning series was the first to highlight instances of children of senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation officials being employed by airlines.

The Society of Publishers in Asia is a body dedicated to excellence in publishing. Its annual awards are the most respected in Asia and are given across several categories and two groups (group A, or large newspapers and magazines in terms of circulation, and group B). Mint’s award was for excellence in investigative reporting in group B. Across groups, it is the only Indian newspaper to win an award. Sopa has two awards in each category, an award for excellence and an honourable mention. Mint won two awards for excellence last year (Sopa awards, 2010), one for business reporting and the other for opinion writing.
