India needs to eschew an NGO mentality in dealing with this issue of national interest

India may finally be charting a coherent response on climate change.

India’s position on the subject is changing. One, it has begun distancing itself from China. As the world’s highest carbon emitter, it makes little sense to treat China in the same way as other developing countries. India’s changing position may have more to do with its economic interests—becoming a powerhouse for manufacturing. Two, New Delhi’s focus may change from climate change mitigation to adaptation. This is a realistic goal, as a binding global treaty on halting climate change may not be possible unless all countries give up their interests or are coerced into signing on the dotted line.

India needs to eschew an NGO mentality in dealing with this issue of national interest. Europe may be ready to sacrifice economic growth for the sake of limiting climate change but India cannot afford to do that.
