Yahoo to launch better search on cellphones
San Francisco:Yahoo Inc., seeking to extend its products beyond personal computers, will introduce a new version of its search engine for mobile phones that gives customers direct answers to their queries.
Users searching for a movie, for example, will immediately see local theaters, news headlines and reviews, Marco Boerries, a Yahoo senior vice-president, said in an interview. The results will include both text and graphical advertising.
The product is part of an effort by Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo to attract more consumers to its mobile services and spur advertising sales. Yahoo was the second-most popular mobile-search engine in the US in January with 3.57 million users, trailing Google’s 4.94 million, according to M:Metrics, a market-research firm in Seattle.
The product, called OneSearch, was previously only available to users who downloaded a separate application called Yahoo Go.
