Genetically modified crops in India
Trials of GM (or genetically modified) crops have been happening in several states across the country, and in several locations within each state. The trials have been under way since 2005. However, only four species of Bt cotton have been approved for commercial, or large-scale, cultivation. All trials were approved by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee, the government’s apex body which approves GM seeds. A public interest litigation filed before the Supreme Court in September 2006 by independent activist Aruna Rodrigues saw the court ordering a ban on such trials. However, another bench of the court lifted this ban last week and allowed the trials to continue, with the rider that some precautions be taken.
