India, the world’s fastest-growing mobile-phone services market, is now the third-largest wireless market by users, communications minister Dayanidhi Maran said. India has overtaken Russia and is ranked behind China and the US, Maran said on Tuesday. India will have 250 million wireless users by the end of the year and 500 million subscribers by 2010, Maran had said earlier on 7 February. Mobile-phone operators in the country added about 4.9 million new users last month on their global system for mobile communications, or GSM, networks. The nation ended February with 1,15.3 million GSM users, the Cellular Operators Association of India said. The number of mobile subscribers in China, the world’s biggest wireless market by users, increased to 467.4 million at the end of January.
