Dell unveils 4G tablet for T-Mobile
Las Vegas: Dell Inc unveiled a new 7-inch touchscreen tablet that will run on T-Mobile’s high-speed 4G network as the PC maker expands its aggressive move into the mobile market.
Dell also gave a sneak peak at a 10-inch tablet that it is working on and announced a new smartphone, the ‘Venue’, which also runs on Android. But there is no wireless carrier for the phone, which will also be sold by the company.
Dell announced the new products during a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show on Thursday. The tablet will be available in the coming weeks, but Dell did not provide a price.
T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 US carrier, is a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG.
Dell is one of a slew of companies rolling out Anroid-based tablets at CES, including Motorola and Toshiba Corp. But Steve Felice, president of Dell’s consumer and small and medium-sized business unit, maintained that the firm is adding some unique features to differentiate its version.
Felice said the company still plans to launch a tablet-based on Microsoft’s Windows, but said the next version of the software may be a better fit for tablets.
Dell launched its first smartphone in 2009 and branched into the tablet market in 2010 with a 5-inch Streak model.
But analysts say Dell’s mobile products have yet to gain traction. The executive in charge of Dell’s mobile group, Ron Garriques,a high profile hire when he arrived in early 2007 is leaving the company this month.
Dell, which vies with Acer Inc for the No. 2 slot in the global PC market, still gets more than half its revenue from PC sales, although the company is trying to diversify into higher-margin businesses such as storage.
Dell CEO Michael Dell has promised that the company will make a big push into the mobile market.
Shares of Round Rock, Texas-based Dell rose 2.5 % to $14.22 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.
