New Delhi: Responding positively to a demand by customers, US computer giant Dell has decided to offer Linux operating system on its PCs and notebooks as an alternative to Microsoft Windows.

"We will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and precision workstation line," the company said on its IdeaStorm blog, according to a report by PC Magazine.

"Our first step in this effort is to offer Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems," the computer maker added.

The company has been struggling in a PC market it once dominated, and hopes that offering Linux on PCs will spur growth.

Soon after founder Michael Dell took the reins of the company once again, polls were conducted last month to find out the changes the customers would like to have in the company’s products.

An overwhelming response indicated that customers desperately wanted more software choices for PCs. Around 70% of the customers were pro-Linux and desired a choice between both notebook and desktop offerings.

Dell offered details about how it will offer Linux on PCs on its Direct2Dell blog, which is designed to collect customer feedback.
