PE funds make a slow start in 2013

PE funds invest $200.8 mn in Indian companies across 34 deals in January, down 75% from the year-ago period

The first month of 2013 saw $200.8 million of private equity (PE) investments in Indian companies across 34 deals, 75% lower than the investments of $812.9 million across 46 deals for the same month last year. The average deal size declined to $9.6 million in January 2013 from $29.0 million in the year-ago period. There were no deals crossing the $50 million mark compared with five deals of more than $100 million in January 2012.

On a month-on-month basis, investments were relatively flat compared with $198.9 million of investments across 36 deals in December 2012. Calendar year 2012 aggregated $8.13 billion of investments across 475 deals, down 27%, compared with investments worth $11.18 billion across 423 deals in 2011.
