New Delhi:Air India Ltd beat rivals in October by gaining an additional 4% share of the domestic passenger market and regaining its number three position for the first time this year, data released by directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) showed on Monday.

Air India cornered a market share of 19.5% compared with 16.6% in September, with the highest passenger occupancy on its flights at 83.5%.

The airline, which has been expanding mostly its international operations with Boeing Co.’s Dreamliners, including to Moscow, Rome, Milan, Sydney and Melbourne, had lost market share to its domestic rivals, who have expanded locally. Air India’s market share had slumped to a low of 16.2% in August.

Most airlines lost their market share over September.

IndiGo’s market share was down to 31.9% from 32.8%, SpiceJet was down to 17.3% from 18.6%, Jet Airways (India) Ltd was down to 20.5% from 20.8%, GoAir was down to 8.5% from 9.2%, while AirCosta remained at 1.1% and AirAsia increased its share marginally to 1.1% from 0.9% earlier.

The increase came in a month which saw 18.31% annual rate of growth. As many as 5.92 million passengers flew in October compared with the same period five million last year.

After Air India, SpiceJet had the highest flight occupancy of 80.1%, followed by AirCosta (78.1%), IndiGo (76.8%), AirAsia (76.2%), Jet Airways (75.8%) and JetLite (73.1%).

“The passenger load factor in the month of October 2014 has shown decreasing trend compared to previous month due to additional flights during the festive season. The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for October 2014 has been 1.36%," DGCA said.

IndiGo had the highest cancellation rate of flights, followed by AirCosta, Air India, GoAir, JetLite, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and AirAsia India.

In a special mention in its report, DGCA noted that the cancellation rate for IndiGo was because of “weather related cancellations due to floods in Jammu & Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh".

During October, a total of 1,080 passenger-related complaints had been received by the scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month has been 1.8. GoAir had the highest complaints, followed by Air India, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, AirAsia, IndiGo and AirCosta. The number of complaints are submitted by the airline to the regulator.

IndiGo had the highest on-time flights at four metro airports—Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. GoAir, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Air India followed. Air traffic jumped a record 28% in September from a year ago, buoyed by travel demand at the start of the festive season in a traditionally lean month for airlines, Mint reported on 18 October. Till about 2011, double-digit growth used to be a normal feature, but that tapered off with the onset of the economic downturn about three years ago.
