New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd, India’s largest luxury car maker, said on Wednesday it sold 10,079 cars in the nine months to September, 34% more than what it sold in the same period last year.

It fell short by 122 cars to better its highest sales ever, which was achieved during 2014 when its annual sales stood at 10,201 units.

The numbers highlight strong demand for high-end cars in the country even as consumer sentiment in India’s mass market segment continues to be sluggish.

Mercedes attributed the growth to its new generation cars through which the three-pointed star is trying to shed the “old boy" tag.

“The CLA, the C-Class and the E-Class sedans spearheaded the sales volumes of Mercedes-Benz, coupled with strong performance from the SUV portfolio as well," the company said in a statement.

It said sales of Mercedes sedans grew by 39% while sales of its popular sports utility vehicles such as GLA, M-Class and GL-Class rose 70% during the period.

The company will launch the new GLE (earlier known as M-Class) on 14 October for the India market.

“I am glad to see the India strategy is bearing fruits, and we are well-poised for entering the Q4 with a very strong footing," Roland Folger, managing director and chief executive, Mercedes-Benz India, said.

“The success of the first three quarters has been in line with our expectations and we are confident of achieving our target of a sustainable double digit growth."
