Power of computing to transform nations

Just as the Industrial Revolution relieved much of humanity of physical drudgery, data analytics and HPC promise to free the human potential

We are living in an exciting period of transformation. We have reached a tipping point where the impact of data, the cloud and high-performance computing (HPC) are no longer reserved for the technology elite; they are transforming virtually all businesses, personal habits and social infrastructure.

The traditional scientific method of theory and experimentation has been transformed through scientific simulation enabled by HPC. HPC has extended the range of exploration beyond the intuitive and analytical processing capability of the human brain. We can now see and understand concepts that just a decade ago were beyond imagination. This has enabled a deeper understanding of everything from the behaviour of sub-atomic particles, to the formation of galaxies, to projecting complex economic outcomes. HPC-driven insights are providing direct benefits in our daily lives through advances in climate modelling, life sciences and energy exploration, to name but a few examples.

The reach of cloud computing, combined with the wealth of data it enables, is nothing short of remarkable. In healthcare, the combination of Big Data and HPC creates tremendous promise by opening new windows into the causes of, and treatments for, complex diseases discoverable through DNA, such as Parkinson’s and cancer. The increased accessibility of HPC through the cloud has the ability to revolutionize the product development process by providing innovators with new tools to create, collaborate, manufacture and deliver to an expanding customer base. We see this occurring today within the maker community.

Just as the Industrial Revolution relieved much of humanity of physical drudgery, data analytics and HPC promise to free the human potential. For instance, those at work in industries like agriculture and transportation can realize greater rewards for their efforts, thanks to predictive capabilities offered through machine learning. These same tools can help to efficiently connect multilingual societies, such as India, with innovations in speech recognition and translation.

Opportunities like these are driving governments around the globe to invest in HPC capabilities as leaders realize the importance of extending their computing power to successfully compete at a global level. So, it is no surprise that India, with its government’s investment of 4,500 crore in the National Supercomputing Mission, has emerged as one of the leading nations on the HPC world map. In the past 15 years, India’s showing on the top 500 list of supercomputers has grown from just one system to an impressive 11, two of which are now in the top 100.

With this additional computing capacity, India has demonstrated significant results in weather prediction and disaster management. In 1999, a cyclone resulted in the tragic loss of 10,000 lives. Through accurate weather prediction enabled by HPC, the number of lives lost in a 2014 cyclone of equal intensity was reduced to 124. India is now expanding its use of HPC to new areas such as seismic engineering for oil exploration, advanced drug discovery, automotive design, industrial manufacturing and aeronautical R&D.

It is extremely gratifying to see industries across the globe utilize HPC tools to positively impact society and drive economic growth. For those of us at Intel who work to deliver these technologies, these possibilities fuel our passion. Gordon Moore, Intel’s co-founder and author of the Moore’s Law, recently said, “With the advent of HPC, much more complex problems can be tackled in a useful way."

Intel is proud to support the leading researchers and governmental agencies of India with foundational technology investments designed to increase the capabilities and accessibility of HPC. With our constant focus on driving Moore’s Law, we will continue the beat-rate of technology innovation to deliver ever-increasing performance at higher levels of energy efficiency and lower cost. HPC is clearly a transformational power and we look forward to seeing it at work through our continued partnership with India.
