Bengaluru: Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani produces the maximum number of mobile app developers in India, followed by Anna University, Chennai and Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka, a report said.

Analysing 25,000 app developer profiles on its platform, hiring start-up Belong.co said 60% of India’s overall fresher and mid-level app developer talent is based in Bengaluru and the national capital region (NCR), although Bengaluru also has a considerable amount of senior talent.

While Mumbai trails all major cities in its share of the total talent pool, it also appears to be growing the fastest. Out of the app developer talent that comes to Mumbai, 24% is from Delhi while 16% is from Pune. “Worryingly, for Hyderabad and Chennai, there’s a talent deficit to overcome. And in both cases, nearly half the outgoing talent pool is relocating to Bangalore," said the report.

About 72% of India’s mobile app developers work on Android which dominates the Indian mobile market, the report said. While HTML5, XML/JSON, JavaScript and CSS are commonly used to code for iOS and Android operating systems, Swift, the iOS programming language widely used across the world, is used by only 12% of Indian app developers.

IT services and computer software companies employ 67% of mobile developers while consumer internet and e-commerce companies figure at third and fifth in the number of developers they employ.

However, developers at consumer internet companies earn nearly twice as much as their peers in services companies.

In Bengaluru and NCR, companies like Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal and Zomato are the top employers of mobile developers, while IT services companies, such as iGate, Infosys and TCS appear to have shifted their hiring focus to less competitive markets in Pune and Mumbai, according to the report.

Around 53% of developers that leave IT services companies join other software and hardware companies, while 37% of those that leave join consumer internet companies.

Developers who have worked for less than two years switch jobs every eight months, while those who worked anywhere between five and 10 years switch jobs every two years.

“This very short tenure across the talent base could be because it takes an average of 18 weeks to develop an app. Even by fair estimates, after the first year, developers are mostly looking at maintenance of the app over fresh learning. This may cause people to seek newer opportunities," said the report.

In 2015, about 40% of those moving to Bengaluru were from NCR and Hyderabad.

About 50% of those moving from NCR relocated to cities in the south, including Chennai and Hyderabad.

The top tier-2 cities for mobile developers are Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Indore, Kochi and Chandigarh, which together contribute 10% of India’s mobile talent pool, according to the report.
