Indian IT, ITeS industry unaffected by cable snag: FICCI

New Delhi: The damage caused to three undersea cables in the Mediterranean may have caused flutters among internet users in different parts of the world but the Indian IT and ITeS industry felt no impact of the sudden disruption, a study said.
“There was no substantial loss as they were using robust technology and had put in place a redundancy plan that allows them to pick up extra bandwidth from multiple service providers, industry body FICCI said.
On Wednesday, two underground cables SEMEWE-4 Cable (SMW-4) and FLAG Cable which connect India to Western Europe, due to anchoring of ships near Alexandria, while news of damage to a third cable was reported on Friday.
While multiple routes of connection and tie-ups with many services providers saved the day for several firms, a few cases of severe work restriction were also reported, it added.
The main problem faced by many small and medium-sized KPO and BPO firms is that it took long to update their information sources that form the backbone of their operations.
Firms reported that they were also unable to work on their near term deliverables and transfer completed assignments that are in the pipeline to their clients, FICCI said.
FICCI survey shows that in the context of the disruption caused by the snapping of undersea cables, the small to medium size companies are actively working for putting in place high technology frameworks even if these are costly.
Companies are also planning to invest in multi-layered redundancy structures so that in case of any adverse development in the future, the functioning of their processes is not affected, it added.
