Judiciary goes hi-tech

New Delhi: Decks have been cleared to digitally connect all courts across the country through a multi-crore project under which President A P J Abdul Kalam will distribute 15,000 laptops to all judges.

Marking the introduction of communication technology in the judiciary, Kalam will distribute laptops to the country’s 15,000 judges in a function on 9July at Vigyan Bhawan here as part of the first phase of the National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology in the Indian Judiciary.

To foster familiarity with technology, the judges will be trained for three months after the distribution of the laptops, Justice G C Bharukha, chairman of the Supreme Court’s E-committee, said.

The action plan, evolved by the Committee, will help in maintaining a database of all cases in courts and will cost approximately ₹ 455 crore.

Besides providing mobile accessibility to the internet, the network will give the Supreme Court and High Court complexes wi-fi or wireless internet connectivity for all desktops and laptops registered with a base station and located within a specified area, the Action Plan of the E-committee states.
