Smartphone manufacturers are getting touchy. HTC’s latest device has a 2.8 inch touchscreen with a 3D interface. The diamond comes with all the trappings necessary for the business user, such as high-speed connectivity and a 4GB storage space. And it even gives you weather updates. ea1c48e4-27fc-11dd-9894-000b5dabf613.flv

But aren’t touchscreen options a must for the youth, and not so much for the CEO? According to Horace Luke, chief innovation officer, “People not only work hard but play hard. The phone offers great user experience. It is just the beginning and we are going to launch more."

The Diamond, which will be available in 25 cities by June, has been priced at Rs27,500 and will be exclusively partnered by service provider Airtel, which will also be selling peddling the iPhone by the end of the year.

Airtel now has tie-ups with all three major players in the smart phone segment.

“They are very different products, as we understand. By the end of this year, iPhone will be in India and it will be targeted against a different customer segment, so as a company, we don’t see any conflict between the two partnerships, both are exclusive," says, Syed Safawi, executive director, Airtel.

HTC plans to sell 50,000 Diamond mobile phones this year. It sold 100,000 phones last year and expects sales to more than double this year. The company also plans to move beyond the Windows platform to Google’s open source Android soon.

Peter Chou CEO, HTC says, “We are still on track, planning to launch Google call phones by the end of this year". HTC is looking to boost sales globally by 30% this year. Its first touch phone called the HTC Touch has already sold 3 million units and is snapping at the heels of the iPhone. The Diamond could cut the lead further.
