Mumbai: Godrej Appliances, a division of Godrej and Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd, has halved the costs of its medical refrigeration appliances for storing vaccines as it aims to reach a wider global market.

The appliances were launched last year.

The company is also expanding its medical refrigeration range to provide solutions for blood storage as blood requires an optimum temperature range of 2-6 degree Celsius, the company said.

The cost reduction has been possible as the company has introduced a new range of appliances which can work for up to three days without power as compared to its previous range that could function for 13 days, said Kamal Nandi, business head and executive vice-president at Godrej Appliances while explaining that following its foray into this sector last year the company has now understood the industry needs better and this range addresses them.

The Lite series has six models starting at 70,000, going up to 125,000. In comparison, the earlier series pricing started at 125,000 and went up to 500,000.

With the new series the company is also expanding its manufacturing capacity for 30,000 units from the current capacity of 10,000 units over the next two years. “We believe the global cold chain requirement is 100,000 units per annum and we are in a position to capture some of this demand," said Jamshyd Godrej, chairman, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co Ltd while sharing that the company hopes to generate 200 crore revenue from its medical refrigerator portfolio by 2020.
