Bangalore: Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies and Wipro Technologies are the top three employers among IT-ITES companies for 2006-07, according to industry body Nasscom.
HCL Technologies and Cognizant were rated fourth and fifth in the top-20 list, a Nasscom release on 19 July 2007 said.
The rankings were based on the India-based headcount of firms with IT-ITES operations in India.
Satyam Computer Services, Hewlett Packard, Genpact, Oracle and Intelnet Global Services figured among the top ten, followed by WNS Global Services, Mphasis, Patni Computers, Convergys and First Source Solutions.
Nasscom sends a detailed questionnaire annually to all its member companies, accounting for 95% of the Indian IT and ITES industry revenue. Information collated through the questionnaire includes aggregate performance; service lines; verticals and geographies.
“The Indian IT-ITES industry is India’s largest employment generator in the organised sector today, creating jobs for over 7.5 million people both directly and indirectly and as per our research this figure is expected to cross 10 million by 2010,” said Kiran Karnik, president of the industry association.
Nasscom is also in favour of extending the Software Technology Park of India scheme — which provides for tax incentives to the IT sector — to smaller cities. “Today, this employment is spread across many cities and the industry is increasingly going to tier II and tier III cities. This process of widespread geographical dispersion of the industry is being adversely affected by the non-extension of the STPI scheme and attendant tax incentives”, he said.
The top-20 companies together employ over 5,00,000 of the 1.6 million people employed directly in the industry.
