New Delhi: Come February 2009 and the national capital will be equipped with a sophisticated and hi-tech system to prevent unplanned growth. The government is planning to come up with a 3-dimensional geo-spatial data of land, buildings and underground utilities in the city using satellite and aerial photography.
The new technology, “Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure", which is supposed to be in place by February 2009, is expected to help government in a number of ways including detecting power theft, streamlining tax collection, helping courts in settling property disputes and managing traffic and relief operations during disasters.
It is also hoped that the new system will help the town planners to tackle the urban mess, which the city is facing currently.
The Government of Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Survey of India for developing the database for the project.
The MoU was signed by Rakesh Mehta, principal secretary, Delhi and N Mohan Rao, director general, Survey of India in presence of the Union Minister for Science and Technology, Lt Governor of Delhi and Chief Minister of Delhi.
The data will be collected from whole of the capital through satellite imagery, aerial photography and videography on land. Land ownership and other records will be superimposed on them so that a consolidated data is ready.
The project will facilitate the detection of illegal constructions and enable monitoring of any changes being made in respect of land and building on real time basis.
“Government will also provide the data to the courts which will help in faster settling if property disputes. An affidavit prepared by an individual can be a lie but the data prepared using technology can’t," said Kapil Sibal.
