New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its order in a batch of pleas seeking to stop the sale of Bharat Stage III (BS-III) vehicles.

A bench comprising justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta is likely to pronounce the order on Wednesday.

Bajaj Auto Ltd and the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), a statutory authority had filed separate petitions against continuing the sale of BS-III vehicles after 1 April.

In January 2015, the Centre had notified that all vehicles—passenger and commercial—must be BS-IV compliant. Several car makers have said that the notification is unclear as to whether it applies only to manufacture of vehicles or also to sales.

However, on 27 March the government clarified that the cut-off date applies only to manufacturing, and that sale of BS-III vehicles can continue even after 31 March.

Several automakers and industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) had told the court that around 800,000 vehicles of BS-III make are in inventories.
