Chennai: Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications will start production of its mobile phones in India by summer at the Chennai factories of electronics manufacturing firms Flextronics India and Foxconn Electronics.
Under the contracts, Flextronics and Foxconn will manufacture 10 million handsets by 2009, Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint told reporters. A spokeswoman for Flextronics India declined to comment.
Flint said Sony decided to make mobile phones in India after its share of total GSM (global system for mobile networks) phones sold in the country tripled to 9% in 2006 from 2005. India, the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, had 106 million GSM customers in December and 36 million on rival CDMA (code division multiple access) networks.
Sony Ericsson, the world’s fourth largest mobile phone maker, will initially make entry level colour and music-enabled cellphones for India. The company will also examine the possibility of exporting mobiles from the country.
