Tata Teleservices, which had hiked the tariff plans for its Walky phones after its categorization was changed from fixed phone to limited mobile service, has been asked to refund the excess amount levied on customers consequent to the reclassification.
Due to the reclassification, the firm was forced to increase the tariffs due to the changed regulatory/licence conditions to cope with competition, the Tatas submitted before the telecom regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Trai has barred the company from utilizing the excess amount charged from the subscribers for any purpose other than refunding it to them. It also asked Tata Teleservices to furnish the number of subscribers adversely affected by the increase in its tariff plan and assess the total excess amount charged.
