Chennai: Rane TRW Steering Systems Pvt. Ltd launched a new airbag manufacturing unit in the outskirts of Chennai on Monday, which is expected to help the organization in expanding its occupant safety division.

The new facility worth 18 crore in Singamperumalkoil will initially supply passenger airbags to Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd and Ford India Pvt. Ltd, and will cater to Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt. Ltd soon, while trying to expand its client base.

“We have sufficient space in Chennai to further expand and are looking forward to invest 6 to 7 crore in the next 18 months," said B.Ayyappan, senior vice president and business head, Rane TRW Steering Systems, on the phone.

Occupant Safety Division of Rane TRW Steering Systems Pvt Ltd is a joint venture between Rane group and ZF TRW.

The launch of airbags by Rane TRW Steering Systems comes a few months after the recall of cars by Honda Motor Co.’s Indian unit and others due to defective airbags supplied by Takata Corp. In May, the Japanese airbag manufacturer admitted that its airbags were defective and recalled nearly 34 million vehicles worldwide.

With the government pushing on the road safety regulations, Rane TRW Steering Systems expects the auto Industry in India to introduce passive safety technologies.

“We anticipate exponential growth in the application of frontal airbags over the next decade and Rane TRW will be well positioned to support both Global OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and Domestic OEMs located in India," said Harish Lakshman, managing director, Rane TRW Steering Systems, at the launch of the airbag plant.

Chennai-based Rane Group launched in 1929 as a distributor of automobiles and auto components and diversified into manufacturing, with revenue of 3,200 crore.
