New Delhi: The government has set a target to increase the number of broadband connections in the country four-fold to two crore by 2010, IT and Telecommunications Minister Dayanidhi Maran said.

“The Ministry of Communications and IT has set a target of providing ninety lakh broadband connections by the end of 2007 and two crore by the end of 2010," an official release quoting Maran said.

With the availability of new technology such as Wi-MAX, the country will add over 10 lakh broadband connections every month before the end of 2007, the release said.

Applications such as teleaid medicines, IPTV, video conferencing, e-governance and e-commerce among others will be available to the people he said.

The minister also said all secondary and higher secondary schools, public health care centers and village panchayats would be provided broadband coverage by the year 2008.
