India-UK to collaborate on climate change

New Delhi: Tackling climate change, facilitating technology partnerships and collaborating in skills development are the areas that have been identified by India and UK as they enter into a strategic partnership, following the CII-CEOs Mission that was organized to UK from 24 - 26 June 2007, led by Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal and 11 other CEOs.

At a meeting hosted by Rt Hon David Miliband MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, UK, a shared understanding on the issue of climate changes vis- a-vis India and India Inc was reached.

The Secretary of State was appreciative of the delegation’s position of the need for ‘common but differentiated responsibility’. Following areas for joint cooperation were highlighted:

* Clean coal technologies

* Carbon sequestration

* Waste-to-energy

* Waste utilization technologies

* Renewable energy

The Secretary of State committed Britain’s support in helping India leapfrog its development from one of high carbon development to low carbon development.

Sharing UK’s concern on climate change

The Secretary of State shared that the UK was committed to providing leadership to tackling the global challenge of climate change. He noted that there were three major planks that Britain was addressing the issue of climate change through - electricity, heat and transport.

Mr Miliband stated that the UK was aiming to have a ’carbon neutral’ Olympics in 2012. He said that this was being done through a very conscious series of initiatives on housing development and transport infrastructure.

To take this issue forward at the business level, CII and its counterpart, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), would be working together to forge a joint action plan.
