New Delhi: As part of efforts to utilize technology to increase efficiency, the Railways is planning to instruct its drivers and guards through SMS.
“All loco drivers and guards will be communicated through SMS about their duties as part of the Crew Management System," said a senior railway official.
The aim is to optimally utilize technology to increase efficiency and do away with the existing manual system, the official said. “Crew booking is being computerized now as part of the new system. Drivers, assistant drivers and guards of all passengers and goods trains will be covered in the system," he said.
“We have finalized the SMS modules which will be applicable to all categories of drivers," said the official.
All major stations where a minimum of 36 drivers report for duty will be covered by the initiative. “The process of computerization involving crew members is already on and railways hope to cover all drivers and guards in the system by October 2008," said the official.
Besides equipping its guards and drivers with the latest technology, the railways is planning to provide hand held terminals to Train Ticket Examiners on all important trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi.
“We are also introducing a parcel management system and developing a software for train scheduling system for time-tabling," said the official.
