Ustad Haafiz Ali Khan of Gwalior | My father and guru, he lent a human expression to the instrument and introduced a variety of vocal styles, including ‘dhrupad’ and ‘khayal’, to its staccato nature. Rightly called the prophet-poet of sarod.
Ustad Allaudin Khan of Maihar | His biggest contribution was that he produced a number of talented protégés, including his son Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and son-in-law, the legendary sitar player Pandit Ravi Shankar.
Ustad Ahmad Ali Khan of Rampur | The guru of Allaudin Khan, he had a typical old style of playing. He maintained the antique flavour of the sarod.
Ustad Ali Akbar Khan | Son of Allaudin Khan, he gave a new dimension to the sarod and taught it to a number of disciples, both Indian and American.
Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra | This old-world ‘sarodiya’ from Bengal stuck to the conventional style of playing, and produced an important disciple in Buddhadev Das Gupta.
