The latest version of Google’s Android operating system is finally rolling out on smartphones outside of Google’s own Nexus and Pixel family. Some phone makers have started launching smartphones running Android Nougat out of the box.
First released in October 2016 and regularly updated since, Android Nougat offers several new features to make Android more user-friendly. Side by side multi-tasking which allows user to work on two apps simultaneously and the option to close all apps running in background at once not only saves time but also allows one to be more productive. The improved notification windows now allow users to reply to messages from the notifications slide itself. Also, the improved battery management tool Doze assures better battery backup than phones on Android Marshmallow.
Phone makers are finally waking up, and rolling out updates for their phones. Here are some of the best value for money smartphones that offers Android Nougat right away.
Moto G4 Plus
The first 5.5-inch screen smartphone in the Moto G series, the G4 Plus grips well and weighs just 155g. The finger print sensor is placed on the front which makes it easily accessible. Though launched on Android Marshmallow, the phone can be upgraded to Nougat right away. The stock Android UI makes it a rarity in the budget segment dominated by phones with custom UIs. The phone runs on a very capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with 2GB RAM in 16GB storage variant and 3GB RAM in 32GB storage model. You can add another 256GB via microSD cards too.
Asus ZenFone 3s Max
The unibody metal body gives the ZenFone 3s Max the look and feel of a flagship phone. It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, yet feels compact and is just 8.9mm thick. This is the first Asus smartphone to offer Android Nougat out of the box. Interestingly, Asus hasn’t tried to subdue any of the features of the new OS and has made changes in its Zen UI to highlight them. The 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1,280x720p is perfect for users looking for a big battery phone with a screen size between 5 and 5.5-inch.

A beefed up version of OnePlus 3, this smartphone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor with 6GB RAM and 3,450mAh battery. The phone offers 64GB storage and has a 128GB GB variant too. Originally released with Android Marshmallow, the phone can be updated to Nougat right away. The phone uses its own custom ROM called OxygenOS, which looks and works a lot like plain Android, but offers some interesting customisations. The phone’s full metal meta body gives it the look and feel of a flagship smartphone.
LG’s new flagship smartphone the V20 is a uniquely designed smartphone with metal body but a removable back cover. The phone’s key highlight is the audio quality and the big 5.7-inch quad HD display. It weighs 174g and is just 7.2mm thick. The smartphone runs Android Nougat with a layer of LG’s custom UI over it. The innards are equally powerful. It runs Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor with 4GB RAM and 3,200mAh battery. It offers 64GB internal storage and up to 256GB of expandable storage via microSD.

Google Pixel is the first smartphone along with the Pixel XL to launch with Android Nougat. It uses Google’s newly designed Pixel Launcher with built-in Google Assistant. The phone has a premium metal body yet it weighs just 143g. The 5-inch AMOLED display has a resolution of 1,920x1,080p and a layer of scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 4. The phone runs on Qualcomm’s high performance Snapdragon 821 quad-core processor with 4GB RAM and a 2,770mAh battery. The phone is available in 32GB and 128GB storage variants. It is a Google device which means it is likely to get the next update too.
