Bollywood Hungama Odissi Ishtyle

Odissi dancer Jhelum Paranjpe set up the dance institute Smitalay in 1989 in memory of her late friend and actor Smita Patil. Since then, she has made a mark in Mumbai as a talented dancer, choreographer and organizer of the annual festival Yuva Mahotsav.
This week, as Smitalay celebrates its 21st anniversary with a concert, Paranjpe and the dancers of Smitalay demonstrate how Odissi is perfectly suitable for Hindi film songs in Bollywood Hungama Odissi Ishtyle. The production, which features more than 20 of Smitalay’s students performing Odissi to the beat of popular Hindi film songs, has been organized by the New Mumbai Bengali Association.

Indian Art and Craft Workshop

A one-of-its-kind arts and crafts exhibition and sale by over 60 craftsmen from various parts of the country, including Andhra Pradhesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Be it leather puppets, dhurries, terracotta toys or Warli paintings, the works of these artistes are full of passion and energy.

Women changing India

BNP Paribas is celebrating its 150th year by sending magnum photographers to document women who are changing the face of India in business, politics, development, livelihood and entertainment. Feminist publishing house Zubaan will release a book that features the photos, along with essays by authors such as Tarun Tejpal and Mukul Kesavan.

Nitin K. Pamnani’s documentary Black Pamphlets is about the Delhi University Students Union elections but ends up saying a lot about India’s relationship with democracy. Pamnani goes behind the scenes of the September 2005 polls and captures the five days of intense campaigning that preceded the elections. Black Pamphlets is a cautionary tale about what happens when political parties co-opt and corrupt student elections. 1 hour, 24 minutes.

Artist Puneet Kaushik’s inspirations are in traditional and folk crafts and his preferred medium is steel and cotton, apart from handcrafted embroidery, employing techniques of weaving and crochet to create installations that explore the tensile nature of the materials. Kaushik graduated in fine arts from Jamia Millia Islamia and followed that with a certificate programme in studio art from the University of California, Berkeley, US.
