That Marc Webb has directed a sequel of a reboot of the friendly neighbourhood superhero means he is taking on the original artist’s imagination. The result is lucrative perhaps, but not that amazing. Spidey is a regular guy, more likely to shed tears than any other superhero in any culture, but in the last instalment, Webb made Peter Parker’s reputation as a man of the world firm. Spider-Man incidentally is out to solve the biggest mystery of all: Why did his parents leave him and what really was his father up to? The questions take him to a deserted subway station, as the film inches towards its climax. Electro has no resolution and Peter and Gwen are left to battle Oscorp’s heir Harry (Dane DeHaan), a lost childhood friend of Peter who has turned into a grey-green monster. Paul Giamatti has an apology of a role as a rogue Transformer-style antihero, who is probably saved for the third instalment.
