Gizmo Guru: Bring the party home
Philip's DJ Party Machine dock isn't for audiophiles, but it's great fun on a budget
The Philips FWP3200D (or party machine as even the people at Philips say) is an over the top, strange, fun speaker dock. It’s a big, bright party machine, which is basically a pair of iPod docks, that also simulates a DJ turntable.
The two record platters on the top are actually docks—instead of an LP, you place your iPod or iPhone onto the 30-pin connector built into the turntable, and it starts playing your tunes on the speaker. The controls are easily accessed on the dock, or you can operate the iPod directly, or use the remote that comes with the dock.
It’s intentionally boxy and big, with copper trimmed speakers. It’s meant to look strange and catch the eye, with got lights around the rim of each speaker, that pulse in time with the beat.
You can spin the turntables for record scratching, fast and slow playback, and you can use the cross-fader to switch the audio from one iPod to the other. It’s a lot of fun even if you don’t know what you’re doing, and while it’s not a professional DJ tool, at Rs34,990, it’s cheap enough that people can buy it just to have fun.
