All proceeds of this charity concert featuring Carnatic vocalist Nithyasree Mahadevan will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India. Granddaughter of the legendary late D.K. Pattammal, Mahadevan is considered an icon of the Pattammal bani and her katcheris are frequently packed. Her fans praise her temple-bell articulation, described by the vocalist Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer as “the 24-carat golden voice".

Harlesden High Street is a series of short exchanges and soliloquies that explore the British-Pakistani community’s simultaneously quotidian and complex negotiations with past memories and present exigencies, as they craft an identity in a new land of both opportunity and loss. Playwright Abhishek Majumdar won the inaugural Hindu MetroPlus playwriting award for this play in 2008. It has been directed by Neel Chaudhuri. 1 hour, 20 minutes.

Denny Paul and Diya Naidu, members of the Attakkalari Repertory Company, Bangalore, will present their debut solo work this fortnight. Paul’s Uyire, an intensely personal work, “traces his past, examines the present and turns to the future", while Naidu’s Nadir tackles isolation and the tools people use to deal with solitude. Paul led a Bollywood dance group in Thrissur, Kerala, before
attending Attakkalari’s auditions in Kozhikode, and making the switch to more exploratory work. Naidu trained in contemporary movement, jazz and Kathak, all of which inform her choreographic work.

City-based theatre collective Perch presents Ms Meena, directed by Rajiv Krishnan. The play revolves around an iconic film star, Ms Meena, earlier known as Asha, who returns to her native village Pichampuram after two decades to make her final film. Pichampuram has descended into a state of poverty and news of the actor’s arrival provides a new burst of energy. Ms Meena announces that she will make the villagers prosperous—but this comes at a price.

Banerjee teaches at the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal in Mumbai.

Padma Shri-awarded director Neelam Mansingh Chowdhry will stage a Hindi adaptation of the Spanish play Blood Wedding by poet Federico Garcia Lorca, as part of the ongoing Summer Theatre Festival organized by the National School of Drama (NSD). The play highlights the struggle between individualism and tradition.

Circle of Art: The Three Tagores

Celebrating Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) has organized a show of works by Tagore and his nephews Gaganendranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore. All three pursued their art in British India, when the search for cultural expression seemed central to the search for a national identity. This show contextualizes a period when Indian artists were groping for a new visual language, and three members from the same family were pursuing their own trail.

Kolkata-based dance group Shinjan Nrityalaya will organize an extensive workshop on bandha nritya, to be conducted by Lingaraj Barik. Bandha nritya is an acrobatic dance style of Odissi which takes its name from the Odia word for acrobatic postures, bandha. The rarely performed style is still practised by Gotipuas (boy dancers) in Odisha. The workshop is only for children below 14.

Based on a story by Bengali novelist Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, the play is centred around Partition and deals with “human ghosts"—people uprooted from their own land. Theatre group Gobardanga Shilpayan, which has been one of the driving forces in Bengali theatre, has given the story a contemporary twist to reflect concerns of land loss, with the focus on tribal issues. The play has been directed by Ashis Chattopadhyay.

Goan music is heavily influenced by Portuguese and Western traditions. Catch glimpses of this in the song and dance routine of mando, which will be performed this week by the Ekvat Group from Portugal. The performers, dressed in traditional costumes, will play instruments such as the violin, bongo and mandolin. This will be followed by a Bharatanatyam dance recital.

Extreme metal band Nile have created a world filled with sarcophagi, papyri and avenging Egyptian gods raining pestilence down on unbelievers. But it isn’t just their ancient Egyptian-themed lyrics that have earned them a huge global following since 1993. Their brutally fast and creative musicianship has a great deal to do with their vast appeal. Though Nile won’t be playing in India, the band’s drummer George Kollias will give fans a taste of their music when he thrashes out a solo drum clinic as a guest of Pearl Drums at the Pro Audio Light and Music Expo at the Bombay Exhibition Centre.

Stories in a Song

Stories in a Song is a collaboration between theatre director Sunil Shanbag and musicians Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan. The 2-hour show is a theatrical collage of seven episodes from musical history, with a soundtrack that ranges from sixth century poems by Buddhist nuns to remixed ragas and Western opera.?The pieces are based on nuggets that Mudgal and Pradhan have unearthed from books and historical records over the last 20 years.
Among the segments is an an excerpt from Gulab Bai’s Bahadur Ladki, about a nautanki performer who takes on a British officer for imprisoning her lover.
