Welcome 2014
Besides being a curtain raiser to the year, this issue also somewhat sets the agenda for the next year or so of Mint Indulge
For many magazines and newspapers, January is a time of great editorial pressure. It is a time when, one way or the other, we’re supposed to tell you what is going to happen in the next 12 months. The pundits in the newsroom are expected to tell you who will win elections, what new mobile phones are going to come out, what new stocks are going to burst forth with volatile richness, and what’s going to be the next big thing in 2014.
In fact, I am currently many days overdue a forecast piece myself for the main Mint newspaper. Shudder.
I find all this doubly painful because I’ve never really been a “Happy New Year" kind of guy. Yes, yes, I know this makes me sound like a grumpy old man. But isn’t all of this festive-ing a little arbitrary? Why should January be a time for new beginnings? Why not in April, along with the fiscal year and taxation year? That seems to make much more sense if you ask me. Besides, January is such a cold and miserable time of the year to start new things. Why not opt instead for the bright bonhomie of early summer?
Sigh. Still, who am I to question the wisdom—or lack thereof—of the ages? So here is our action-packed, celebrity-filled guide to the year ahead. Whether you agree with January’s fiendish choke-hold over fresh starts or not, there is something in our calendar to excite every reader.
In previous issues of Mint Indulge, we’ve presented calendars. But in all those cases the aggregating was carried out by the Indulge team. This year we decided to cut out the middle people and go straight to the mother lode. We asked a whole host of experts—see index—to give us a list of unmissable events and dates in the next 11 months. Read through an indulgent list of food, drink, spirit, fashion and auto events.
We also have two must-read previews. Varun Rana gazes into the crystal ball of men’s fashion and forecasts the trends in the year ahead. Yours truly recently spent a week in Geneva at the SIHH watch fair. There were some unmistakable trends and aesthetic statements. Read about them in our SIHH preview.
Also find our profile of the latest instalment of the art events in the Indian subcontinent.
Besides being a curtain raiser to the year, this issue also somewhat sets the agenda for the next year or so of Mint Indulge. This year, you will see from us, a greater commitment to the aspects of indulgent living we do every month, but also a greater commitment to cover a broader range of topics with greater depth. Men’s fashion, automobiles, gadgets and travel will all figure more prominently.
Hang around, won’t you?
