For love of leather
For love of leather
It’s a corner for chic things made of leather and is buried deep inside the heart of Hauz Khaz Village. Set up four months ago by Gautam Sinha, 31, Nappa Dori (a combination of Nappa, a type of leather, and dori, meaning thread or string in Hindi) is a good place to head to if you’re looking for handcrafted leather items, especially for men.
Nappa Dori, the store, started out as an experiment. “Retail marketing is growing at such speed and I felt there’s a void in the field of the handcrafted, leather segment. Apart from Hidesign and Da Milano, there’s nothing much, more so if you want a stylish leather product that’s made in India, where do you go?" asks Sinha. It was this that prompted him to set up his own space. All products at Nappa Dori are made at Sinha’s workshop in Lado Sarai, Delhi.
Our favourite was a set of old-fashioned trunks. The trunks, in pop-out colours such as yellow, red, purple and green stacked on top of each other, are eye-catching. Made in powder-coated metal with fabric lining inside and leather straps and accents, they’re priced at ₹ 8,800. “People don’t really buy the trunks to carry luggage, but more as decor pieces. But once an artist bought it to carry his paints and brushes. Another time a photographer bought it for her equipment. We made special compartments for lens, etc.," says Sinha. The designer is currently working on a floor cushion—“they’re perfect for a bachelor pad," he says.
Next in line: plans to set up a retail outlet in Mumbai and an online store.
